AI and Digital Transformation Dominate Regional Policy Discussions

Artificial intelligence has emerged as one of the most prominent themes across Asia-Pacific policy and business discussions in 2026.

At multiple APEC meetings this year, leaders have emphasized the transformative impact AI is having on economic growth, innovation, workforce development, and competitiveness. Policymakers are increasingly focused on balancing rapid technological adoption with responsible governance, digital inclusion, and international cooperation.

The APEC Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation recently highlighted the importance of “open and collaborative innovation ecosystems” as economies seek to leverage AI and emerging technologies to support resilient growth. Discussions included AI governance, researcher mobility, digital transformation, and public-private collaboration.

Meanwhile, APEC’s Telecommunications and Information Working Group identified AI adoption, digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, and interoperability as major priorities for the region.

For associations, these developments create both opportunities and responsibilities. Members are increasingly seeking guidance on AI adoption, workforce implications, ethical considerations, and industry best practices. Associations that can provide leadership in these areas are likely to become even more valuable to their communities.
